Line of Site or FPV? What’s the Difference?

Welcome to Touched By A Turtle! Today we will be discussing Line of sight flying and FPV flying. The difference and which is best for the environment you are flying in. Let’s jump right and grow together!

Practice, Practice, Practice!!

Flying my drone has been a learning experience I could not have ever dreamed of doing. This started me to wonder about other ways of piloting a drone. I start to look into the FPV world and the use of that type of flying. During this time I used Line of sight to practice piloting my drone. In my opinion it is the best way to get use to using the controls. I urge you as a new pilot to practice, practice, practice. Let’s get going on defining and understanding each way of piloting a drone.

Line of Site, What and Where!

Together we have been practicing our piloting skills with Line of sight flying. I have found that this was best used when inside with the micro and medium-sized drones that can handle very little to no wind outdoors. What did you find with your practice of flying line of sight? Send in your findings below in the comments section. I digress, When outdoors in a legal flying area, I believe that line of sight flying outdoors is much better than inside for the obvious reason of space. It became much easier for me to use the pitch, draw, and yaw. We have established that line of sight is piloting within your field of view, keeping your drone in your view at all times. The other way of piloting your drone is FPV, we are about to embark on a fascinating way to fly.

FPV, What and Where!

What a great day! we have been practicing our flying by way of line of sight and have become very familiar with the controls. Let’s go try FPV! This type of piloting is done without being able to actually see your drone. This is done through goggles and cameras on board the drone. There are many types of FPV modes and goggles. We will get into that in another discussion. When I first learned of this type of flying I asked where would I use that for my hobby of just flying around? Well The answer is everywhere! Trying FPV means you need a pair of goggle or smart phone. Some drones come with googles you can put your smartphone in and the app for the drone allows the screen to split so FPV is possible. Proprietary drones like DJI have their own proprietary goggles. The view is amazing right!! This is why learning line of sight is crucial in this application, can you? Wow, you really have to be super comfortable with the controls, it is very easy to crash. There we are we have learned to fly line of sight and now we have grown into an FPV pilot. Congratulations!!

Difference makes skill!

Now that we have been practicing the new to us FPV type of flying, we can continue to grow as a pilot learning new skills. If you are into the pictures and creating video, racing, or just fooling around both types of piloting a drone are applicable. It seems to me that FPV is the main way to pilot today. I have seen a very few people piloting line of sight around my area. I have seen many using their goggles however. A DRL pilot, googles are a must. In the filming and picture world alike, Which do you prefer? What kind of pilot do you want to be? leave your comments in the section below.

Landing Zone!

FPV, Line of sight either way you are learning and growing as a person by way of connecting to others of the same interests. That is what this sight is all about, building friendships through drones. This discussion was fun for me and I hope it was for you? Any questions or comments please feel free to leave them in the comment section below. Thanks for chatting with me Happy Flying!!!

Great article on the difference between Line of Sight and FPV flying. I have been wanting a drone for awhile and didn’t even realize there were different ways to fly them. I’d definitely want to get really good at intuitively knowing the controls by flying with line of sight before trying to put on some goggles for FPV haha.

What does FPV stand for exactly, first person viewing?

How very exciting right! Yes the FPV stands for First person view. The view is intense when trying to fly. I have tried it and I crashed so many times. I really recommend that you get line of sight down first. it has been said that once a pilot is able to do figure 8s then is a good time to learn FPV. Thank you for your comments.

I have always been amazed by how drone technology has progressed over the year. I always want to learn how to fly it myself. I will definitely go for the line of sight first as per your suggestion. FPV sounds very interesting and just like being in the driver seat. Would you get dizzy after a few minutes of FPV? Thanks for the great tips!

I have heard of people getting dizzy a little bit the first couple of times they FPV. I have heard some individuals cannot do FPV because of vertigo, however they had vertigo before they started to fly. Thank You for your comments.
